Calaveras County, California, is in the heart of the historic Gold Country. It is 1,100 square miles of beautiful scenery, bordered on the south by the Stanislaus River and New Melones Lake, which it shares with Tuolumne County -- one of Yosemite's Gateways. Calaveras County's northern border is the Mokelumne River. This boundary is shared with Amador County of Shenandoah Valley Wine fame.

The topography of Calaveras County runs the gamut from gentle, rolling oak-studded hills to the west to some of California's best downhill and cross country skiing at Bear Valley in the east. Scenic Highway 4 is Calaveras County's main east-west corridor, with the Golden Chain Highway 49 running through it north and south.

Two and one-half hours driving time from Calaveras will put you in San Francisco, Lake Tahoe or Yosemite Park, depending on which direction you take.
